Research, knowledge generation and learning

The continuous development of an on-going and systematic research agenda to support the new thinking around sustainable development approaches to managing displacement impacts will be central to the work of the RS. Developing research and knowledge platforms will require the building of strong partnerships with universities, think tanks and other organizations that are able to champion specific research agenda to promote a culture of learning that also drives policy orientation. The research outputs generated will be instrumental in informing policy options for IGAD Member States and influencing programming for durable and transitional solutions by key actors. Research projects within the member states will particularly be undertaken in a comprehensive manner to ensure that the needs of women, youth and other vulnerable groups are well articulated. A very clear criteria for research will be developed and validated by the RPSC. This will be through a consultative process that will ensure inclusion of research interests by project countries emanating from DRDIP implementation. Research findings will be disseminated at both national and regional level for issues that cut across even though emanating from only one country.

One of the main thrusts of the research projects of the RS will be to improve the understanding of the nexus between socio-economic development, forced displacement and mixed migration in the HoA. Understanding the main drivers of displacement and mixed migration will require the conscientious effort of various organizations. The RMMS-IGAD mixed migration monitoring mechanism (4Mi) will play a special role in monitoring migration flows including profiles and destinations of migrants while mapping main drivers with the sole aim of supporting IGAD Member States address the root causes of displacement and migration in refugee hosting areas and other parts of the IGAD region. An impact evaluation that measures gender outcomes on investments in education will be conducted and feed into the operational guidelines on gender based violence at the national and regional level.
